Unit History & Evolution

  • Inception (1988-1992) Founded on August 15, 1988, by DIG Upali Sahabandu with 28 members. Conducted jungle operations until 1992.
  • Stage One Re-formed for jungle ops in Ampara/Batticaloa. Trained in combat motorcycling in 1998 for Vavuniya ops.
  • Stage Two Modernized as "Cheetah Small Groups" with advanced unconventional warfare tactics to counter terrorists.
  • Stage Three Re-established under Senior DIG Waruna Jayasundara to enhance and protect natural forests.

Guardians of Nature

Currently deployed to protect Sanctuaries, Wild life Reserves, and Forests.
Primary Duties: Patrol to monitor and encounter illegal dangerous activity in the forest.
Specialized Support: Deployed to augment special security requirements.

  • Internal: Weapons, Tactics, Explosives, Map Reading, Abseiling, Slithering.
  • Army SF: Tracking & Jungle Survival (2 Weeks).
  • Navy SBS: Amphibious Combat (3 Weeks).
  • Air Force: Air Support & Landing (3 Weeks).
  • Medical: Hygiene & IV Cannula.
