Deputy Inspector General of Police Deva Gamini Samantha De Silva, the Commandant of the Special Task Force (STF) of the Sri Lanka Police, is a distinguished senior officer whose career spans nearly four decades of exemplary service, leadership, and commitment to public security and national security. A proud alumnus of Nalanda College, Colombo, he commenced his policing career on 01 December 1986, when he was appointed as a Sub Inspector of Police.

After completing his foundational training at the Sri Lanka Police College, he volunteered to join the Special Task Force, on 27 March 1987, marking the beginning of a remarkable operational career.

He underwent the 10th Jungle Warfare Course, conducted with special emphasis on Counter-Revolutionary Warfare and facilitated by former British SAS instructors. Upon successful completion of this rigorous program, he was deployed to the Batticaloa District, one of the most volatile operational theatres during the height of insurgency in the North and East. Throughout this period, he displayed exceptional bravery and resilience, notably sustaining serious injuries in the line of duty during an armed confrontation. After dedicated service within the STF for more than ten years, he returned to mainstream policing in 1996.

DIG De Silva has been honored with several prestigious decorations in recognition of his gallantry, integrity, and professional excellence, including the Desha Putra Medal, the Poorna Bhumi Medal, and the Police Medal for Distinguished Service, among other commendations.

His academic achievements complement his operational expertise. He holds a Master’s Degree in Human Rights from the University of Colombo and has participated in numerous professional development programs, including Close Protection Training in Russia.

DIG De Silva has held several critical leadership appointments within the Police and the STF, including Director, Diplomatic Security Division; DIG, Headquarters Administration; and Police Ombudsman before being appointed as the Commandant of the STF.

DIG Samantha De Silva is married to Mrs. Diluka Mendis, and they are blessed with two children.
